Samsung Makes a Move: Unveiling the Vision Pro, Their High-End AR Device Soon

Samsung's Project Moohan, the first XR headset from the tech giant, is set to shake up the virtual reality market with its innovative features and competitive pricing.

Powered by Google's Android XR operating system, Project Moohan utilises Qualcomm's Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chipset and features micro-OLED displays sourced from Sony. The headset also includes hand and eye tracking, and an external battery pack for extended use.

In contrast, Apple's Vision Pro, which retails at $3,499, runs on Apple's proprietary visionOS and boasts an exterior display called EyeSight. This high price point has been a barrier for many potential users interested in an XR experience.

Regarding user interface, Project Moohan offers immersive AI-powered experiences, leveraging Android XR’s integration with Android apps. On the other hand, the Vision Pro provides a unique spatial computing UI tailored to visionOS. The display details for Project Moohan’s Sony micro-OLED panels haven't been fully disclosed yet, but the Vision Pro is known for its very high-resolution display setup.

Price-wise, Project Moohan aims to keep costs more reasonable by cutting down on costly redundant technologies found in the Vision Pro. While the exact pricing for Project Moohan has not been released yet, it is expected to be positioned as a more affordable alternative to the Vision Pro.

The XR industry benefits from the entry of more and bigger players, as it brings more attention and progress to the field. The success of Project Moohan in the market may depend on its pricing strategy, and it is unclear at this point what the differences are between Moohan and the Vision Pro.

Project Moohan is expected to be released in the second half of this year and go on sale before the year is over. With its lower price point and innovative features, Samsung's Project Moohan has the potential to differentiate itself from Apple in the price arena, making XR technology more accessible to a wider audience.

However, the effectiveness of Android XR compared to Apple's visionOS is a major question, given the importance of seamless UI in both devices. The effectiveness of a lower price for Project Moohan in driving sales compared to the Vision Pro is uncertain. As the release date approaches, more details about Project Moohan are expected to be revealed, shedding light on these questions.
