SBS Utilizes Intraplex for Designing High-Definition Digital Radio Network (HD2)
In a modern twist on traditional radio broadcasting, Spanish Broadcast System (SBS) has harnessed the power of technology to deliver its hybrid regional Mexican and urban format, La Privada, to listeners across the United States and Puerto Rico.
The journey of La Privada begins at SBS' Los Angeles studios, where the program feed is meticulously generated. This feed is then transmitted over mostly private fiber links to transmitter sites in each market, ensuring a consistent listening experience for SBS listeners.
Initially, SBS used two IPL-100c codecs for the KLAX feed. However, as the network expanded, Tosch, the technical team at SBS, installed an IPL-200n dual-channel codec at the origination point to cater to the growing demand for audio insertion for market-specific legal IDs via network triggering. The IPL-100n codecs were subsequently deployed to all nine transmitter sites, including KLAX, replacing the IPL-100c.
The IP Link, a key component of the Intraplex system, is capable of taking in a contact closure from SBS' automation, allowing each station to trigger local IDs. This feature, combined with the ability to add 10 destination points to the IPL-200n, has allowed SBS to expand its reach while maintaining a consistent brand identity for La Privada, which is maintained on HD2.
SBS' Puerto Rico feed, due to the high cost of fiber, is compressed for transport over public internet while maintaining audio quality. This innovative approach ensures that SBS can deliver high-quality audio to its listeners, regardless of their location.
The design of the IP Link, along with its dual-channel full duplex capability, network path redundancy, advanced audio processing and compression, and low power and compact design, collectively support seamless, reliable, and high-quality audio distribution between multiple broadcast sites. These features have proven instrumental in SBS' successful multisite networking setup.
This month, our website's Buyer's Guide focuses on codecs and STLs. The articles aim to help readers understand why their colleagues chose particular products to solve various technical situations, as exemplified by SBS' choice of GatesAir's Intraplex IP Link codecs.
