Scam artists have concocted a fresh strategy to deceive by exploiting access to "Gosuljam" platform
Fake "Gosuslugi" tech support scammers have been tricking Russians into divulging their account credentials, prompted by emails or messages impersonating official support notifications, Russia's Ministry of Internal Affairs (MVD) reports, according to the MVD press center.
In these interactions, citizens are encouraged to contact the 'technical support' using a fake number. According to law enforcement, these fake support messages, while appearing as automated responses, encourage victims to call the given number, where they are met by fraudsters.
Moreover, criminals within the computer underground have developed a method to create phony MVD websites. These sites are engineered to steal Russian citizens' personal information, with scammers employing tactics such as domain name spoofing, website cloning, and social engineering.
Scammers often register domain names that mimic official MVD or Ministry of Internal Affairs URLs, using minor misspellings, extra characters, or fake subdomains. They may also exploit trust by using SSL certificates and redirecting users from legitimately compromised sites.
Upon accessing these fabricated websites, users can unknowingly submit their sensitive details via forms, be prompted to download malware, or be driven to make fraudulent payments for nonexistent fees or penalties.
To avoid such scams, MVD advises the public to verify the website URL, beware of slight deviations, never click links in unsolicited emails, and only interact with official channels for government communications. Being aware of these tactics will help citizens protect themselves from falling victim to the increasingly common online fraudulent activities.
