Self-Driving and Autonomous Vehicles Update: Oxa, Beep, Cruise, Uber, Gatik, STRADVISION, IIHS, Lotus, Guident, and JLR in Focus
In the heart of Contra Costa County, California, a new era of transportation has begun. Oxa, a leading technology company specializing in autonomous vehicle software and hardware integration, and Beep, an experienced autonomous shuttle operator, have joined forces to bring safe, efficient, and community-friendly autonomous transportation to the Rossmoor community.
Collaboration Between Oxa and Beep
The partnership between Oxa and Beep is a strategic move aimed at leveraging Oxa's advanced autonomous driving technology and Beep's operational expertise. The collaboration's primary goal is to deliver a reliable, safe, and user-friendly shuttle experience in a residential setting.
Oxa contributes the core autonomous driving system, known as the Oxa Driver, which includes perception, planning, and control capabilities necessary for safe navigation. On the other hand, Beep manages the shuttle fleet operations, ensuring smooth day-to-day service within the community.
Deployment of Oxa Driver in Rossmoor
The Oxa Driver system is integrated into fully electric autonomous shuttles that operate on fixed routes around Rossmoor. These shuttles can safely navigate streets and obstacles thanks to advanced sensors, cameras, and AI-powered algorithms.
Rossmoor, a gated senior community with well-defined roadways, low traffic speeds, and predictable pedestrian activity, offers an ideal environment for deploying and testing autonomous shuttles. The service rollout included extensive testing phases to ensure the Oxa Driver system could handle various operational scenarios.
While fully autonomous, the service features remote monitoring by safety operators who can intervene if necessary, enhancing the safety and reliability of the service.
Features of the Autonomous Shuttle Service
The shuttle operates on predefined routes within Rossmoor, providing convenient access to key community locations such as shopping centers, recreational areas, and residential clusters. Residents can use the shuttle on a scheduled basis or, depending on the system setup, request rides in real-time through an app or kiosk.
The shuttles are designed to be accessible to seniors and individuals with mobility challenges, featuring easy boarding and space for mobility devices. The use of electric vehicles aligns with sustainability goals and reduces the community’s carbon footprint.
Safety Features are a top priority. Oxa Driver incorporates multiple layers of safety, including redundant sensor arrays and AI-based decision-making to detect and appropriately respond to pedestrians, cyclists, vehicles, and unexpected obstacles.
The autonomous shuttle service, named PRESTO, services Rossmoor Walnut Creek, a 55+ active senior community, and operates Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. with a trained safety attendant on board.
This deployment marks a significant step toward integrating autonomous vehicles into everyday community transportation, paving the way for smarter, greener, and more accessible mobility solutions in the future.
