Semiconductor company Valens and Intel's foundry plan to collaborate on the development of MIPI A-PHY technology.
Valens Semiconductor, a leader in MIPI A-PHY technology, has announced a collaboration with Intel Foundry Services (IFS) to fabricate its second generation of A-PHY chipsets using IFS's advanced process nodes. This strategic partnership aims to address the growing demand in the industry for MIPI A-PHY, an innovative connectivity solution for the automotive sector.
The collaboration will see Valens Semiconductor benefit from Intel's ecosystem and advanced processes, enabling significant cost and power reductions for its A-PHY chipset family. Gideon Ben Zvi, CEO of Valens Semiconductor, stated that the collaboration with IFS will provide best-in-class processes for Valens' A-PHY chipsets, furthering their strategic relationship which started with the development of the next generation of A-PHY in the automotive industry based on Intel's leading-edge technology.
MIPI A-PHY is the first automotive industry standard developed for in-vehicle high-speed sensor connectivity, released in 2020. As a key contributor to the MIPI A-PHY standard, Valens Semiconductor aims to provide the most resilient high-performance connectivity technology, enabling significantly safer vehicles in the future. The second generation of A-PHY chipsets will achieve the highest-performance and flawless Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC).
The chiplet architecture in the automotive sector will rely on advanced package integration and the use of standardized interfaces such as UCIe. MIPI A-PHY will complement this architecture by using MIPI A-PHY as the standardized connectivity interface. This collaboration will play a significant role in boosting the vision for a chiplet architecture in the automotive industry.
Intel Foundry Services offers a full suite of resources, including advanced process and packaging technologies, and a broad IP portfolio, to further advance Valens' A-PHY products. Stuart Pann, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Intel Foundry Services, stated that the MIPI A-PHY chipset is an obvious fit for accelerating innovation and unlocking new opportunities for their customers.
The collaboration between Valens and IFS will also further the autonomous vision in the automotive industry. By providing high-speed, reliable, and low-latency connectivity, MIPI A-PHY will meet the automotive market's requirements for high reliability, high performance, and low latency. The second generation of A-PHY chipsets from Valens Semiconductor, manufactured using Intel Foundry Services' leading core technology, is planned to be released in the first half of 2024.
The collaboration between Valens Semiconductor and Intel Foundry Services is a significant step forward in the development of advanced connectivity solutions for the automotive industry. With its focus on high performance, reliability, and low latency, MIPI A-PHY is set to be a key enabler of the next-generation silicon architecture. This collaboration will undoubtedly contribute to the development of safer, more autonomous vehicles in the future.
