Sony reportedly developing a new PlayStation handheld device
Sony is reportedly in the works to develop a new PlayStation handheld console, internally codenamed "Jupiter."
According to leaker Jukanlosreve, Sony is currently evaluating a low-power gaming system-on-chip project. The device's chip is said to be developed by AMD and fabricated using Samsung Foundry's SF2P node, although discussions between Sony, AMD, and Samsung are yet to be finalized.
Rumors of a new PlayStation handheld console have been circulating since November 2024, with the device expected to run PS5 games natively. The new console is said to position itself against competitors such as the Nintendo Switch and the Xbox handheld prototype.
However, like previous reports, the handheld's launch is likely still several years away, with speculation that it may coincide with the release of the PlayStation 6 in late 2028.
The rumored "Jupiter" handheld is said to offer performance between an Xbox Series S and a PlayStation 5, with slightly reduced memory bandwidth for lower resolution and frame rates.
While the details regarding the new handheld console are still under review and subject to change, the interest and speculation surrounding it continue to grow. Sony has yet to make an official announcement on the matter.
The upcoming "Jupiter" handheld console from Sony could find itself competing with other gadgets in the market, such as smartphones, as it offers gaming capabilities similar to the Xbox Series S and PlayStation 5. In addition to this new handheld, Sony is also rumored to be working on a low-power gaming system-on-chip, which, if realized, could expand the company's computing technology beyond consoles. As the PlayStation 6's release date approaches in late 2028, it is exciting to consider the potential additions to Sony's gaming lineup, including smartphones, other gadgets, and various types of consoles.
