Sony's Camera Verify combats the issue of fake photographs by verifying their authenticity through 3D image authentication technology.

In an era where the digital world demands increased trust in photography and photographers, Sony has taken a significant stride forward with its Camera Verify technology. This innovative solution, built on the C2PA standard, aims to combat fake content and ensure the credibility and trustworthiness of visual information.

Sony's Camera Verify technology embeds two key types of data directly into an image at the moment it is captured. The first is C2PA Digital Signatures, cryptographic signatures based on standards from the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA). These signatures provide a secure, tamper-evident digital signature that proves the image’s origin and authenticity.

The second is Sony's proprietary 3D Depth Information, which captures the scene's depth information in 3D at the time the photo is taken. This unique data creates a kind of "fingerprint" of the real physical scene, making it possible to verify the image's authenticity by checking the digital signature and matching the depth data to detect any inconsistencies.

The verification process can be accessed externally through a dedicated URL, allowing third parties such as news organizations to quickly and reliably confirm an image’s authenticity online via Sony’s Image Validation Site. This helps combat misinformation and ensures trustworthy content dissemination, especially critical in the era of generative AI.

Currently available as a Beta version, Camera Verify is compatible with several Sony camera models, including the A1 II, A1, A9 III, A 7S III, and A7 IV. Sony also plans to expand this solution to video content after fall 2025, further enhancing media trustworthiness.

In addition, Sony offers a 'Default Certificate' (free) and a 'Digital Signature Upgrade License' for image metadata digital safeguard. This ensures a transparent editing history in compliance with the C2PA format.

The technology is effective at detecting AI-generated images and sophisticated manipulations, providing a powerful tool in the fight against misinformation and fake news. With Camera Verify, Sony is leading the way in ensuring a more authentic and trustworthy digital world.

| Aspect | Description | |-------------------------|---------------------------------------------------------------| | **Digital Signature** | C2PA cryptographic signature proving image origin | | **3D Depth Information**| Sony’s proprietary depth data of the scene captured in-camera | | **Verification method** | Online validation via dedicated URL to check authenticity | | **Purpose** | Detect AI-generated/manipulated images by identifying digital and depth inconsistencies |
