South African Shoppers Embrace Online Grocery, Boosting Checkers' Sixty60 Sales
South African consumers are increasingly embracing digital solutions and online shopping, as seen in the rising popularity of online grocery platforms and cashback services offered by major retailers like Macy's, PayPal, and Kroger. This shift in consumer behaviour is reflected in the sales figures of Checkers, where Sixty60 orders account for 12.2% of total sales. Meanwhile, groceries remain a significant expense, making up 28% of incomes for South Africans.
The changing spending habits of consumers are evident in the preferences for different grocery retailers. Shoprite and Pick 'n Pay are favoured by various consumer segments, while Spar comes in as a close third. The average spend per trip at Pick 'n Pay is over R420, and Shoprite's clientele may spend more than R17 000 in a single visit. Woolworths also sees an increase in customers towards the end of the month.
Major retailers like Checkers, Shoprite, Pick 'n Pay, and Boxer offer cashback services to attract more shoppers and reduce transaction fees. This strategy aligns with the growing trend of online grocery shopping, with platforms like Loop and Pingo refining their delivery services to meet consumer demand. The distribution of shopping activity at these supermarkets remains consistent, with spikes from the 26th to the 29th of the month.
The evolving consumer landscape in South Africa, marked by digital adoption and changing shopping habits, presents both opportunities and challenges for grocery retailers. As groceries continue to be a significant expense for consumers, retailers must adapt their strategies to cater to these shifting preferences and maintain competitiveness in the market.
