SpaceX's $17B Spectrum Deal Boosts Global Broadband Plans
SpaceX has made significant strides in its plans to provide global broadband internet services. The company recently acquired S-band spectrum from EchoStar for $17 billion, paving the way for direct-to-device services by the end of 2023.
SpaceX's ambitious plans include launching its next-generation direct-to-device satellites in two years. This follows a successful Starship test flight on August 26, 2022, and plans to launch a more powerful version 3 of Starship later this year or early next year.
To make this happen, SpaceX will need new agreements with mobile network operators. It has already partnered mainly with AT&T and is in discussions with Verizon. AT&T has agreed to buy 50 MHz of EchoStar spectrum, with Verizon also negotiating to acquire some. These partnerships will be crucial for utilizing the EchoStar S-band spectrum.
SpaceX also aims to demonstrate the ability to transfer propellant from one Starship to another in low Earth orbit, a key technology for sustainable space travel. Additionally, it plans to conduct tests on phones using the new spectrum by the end of 2022.
SpaceX's acquisition of EchoStar's S-band spectrum and its partnerships with mobile network operators bring its global broadband internet plans a significant step closer. With successful Starship tests and upcoming launches, the company is poised to revolutionize satellite internet services.
