In August 2025, the unique Scientific-Technological and Industrial Park in Holguín, known as Nucleum S.A., was inaugurated, marking a significant milestone for the region. This multithematic park, the first of its kind in Cuba, aims to drive territorial development through innovation, technology, and sustainable solutions.
Prime Minister Manuel Marrero Cruz led the official opening, underscoring the importance of treating the assisted persons with sensitivity, as the park's staff carry out their work. Initially, Nucleum S.A. operates under a decentralized model, utilizing university spaces, particularly at the University of Holguín. The park is currently working towards building physical infrastructure while fostering public-private alliances and prototype laboratories.
Nine thematic lines form the focus areas of Nucleum S.A., encompassing sectors such as pharmaceutical development, food security, entertainment industries, and health, energy, and environmental sustainability. These thematic lines are designed to address regional challenges and integrate scientific capacity from local universities, including Holguín, Moa, and Medical Sciences, to support knowledge transfer and innovation commercialization.
The park's impact on provincial development is far-reaching. It seeks to reduce development gaps between municipalities, promote entrepreneurship in both public and private sectors, including in more remote areas, and target solving social issues by applying science-based solutions, particularly important under the ongoing economic blockade impacting Cuba. By acting as a collaborative ecosystem linking academia, government, and business, Nucleum S.A. aims to enhance Holguín’s socio-economic landscape.
Manuel Marrero Cruz, the Prime Minister of Cuba, affirmed that the development of science and innovation is crucial for finding solutions to the country's problems. He emphasized that the new Scientific-Technological and Industrial Park in Holguín should focus on action, not creating false expectations. One of the projects in progress at the park is the planting of transgenic corn on ten hectares for the production of animal feed.
The El Cedral farm, which supports several institutions, including a children's circle and a school, is another initiative supporting Holguín's development. The farm carries out sales at affordable prices in public fairs. Manuel Marrero Cruz visited the El Cedral farm during his trip to Holguín, underscoring the importance of these local initiatives in the region's development.
In addition to his duties at Nucleum S.A., Manuel Marrero Cruz also traveled to the municipality of Gibara and participated in a meeting of the Municipal Administration Council there. He was elected deputy to the National Parliament for the municipality of Gibara, further demonstrating his commitment to the region's development.
In conclusion, Nucleum S.A. is positioned as a catalyst for sustainable growth, innovation, and industrial modernization in Holguín. By leveraging local scientific potential and contributing to a more diversified and resilient provincial economy, the park aims to drive Cuba's development strategy in vital themes such as tourism, entertainment industry, business products and services, energies, biotechnology, food security, and transportation.
Science and technology played pivotal roles in the inauguration of Nucleum S.A., with a focus on spheres such as pharmaceutical development, food security, and energy sustainability. The park aims to utilize these fields to solve social issues and drive Holguín's development, aligning with the Prime Minister's emphasis on the importance of science and innovation for Cuba's progress.
