Svolt Energy Advances Semi-Solid-State Battery Production

Svolt Energy will initiate trial manufacturing of semi-solid-state battery units in the final quarter of the year.

Svolt Energy, a prominent player in the battery industry, is set to take a significant step forward in the development of electric vehicle (EV) batteries with the commencement of trial production of its semi-solid-state batteries. This milestone marks a new era for the company, positioning it at the forefront of battery technology innovation.

The trial production, scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2025, will see the supply of these batteries to BMW's Mini brand for their next-generation models, with mass production slated for 2027 [1][2]. The first-generation semi-solid-state batteries, designed as soft-pack batteries, boast an energy density of 300 Wh/kg and offer a significant cost advantage [3]. The second-generation of these batteries is expected to boost this energy density to 360 Wh/kg [1][3].

Svolt Energy's base in Huzhou, Zhejiang province, recently witnessed the rollout of the second-generation Dragon Armor Battery from its production line [4]. This innovative battery pack structure, not battery chemistry, is poised to revolutionise the EV industry.

The company's semi-solid-state batteries, using high-manganese iron nickel cells, could potentially achieve a range of over 1,000 kilometers [5]. Meanwhile, the Dragon Armor Battery with lithium iron phosphate cells could deliver a volume packaging efficiency of 76 percent and a range exceeding 800 kilometers [6]. Additionally, the new-generation Dragon Armor Battery supports 5C rate charging, enabling it to charge from 20 percent to 80 percent in just 12 minutes [7].

Svolt Energy's advancements in battery technology have not gone unnoticed. The company currently ranks ninth in the domestic power battery market with a 2.06 percent share, according to the China Automotive Battery Innovation Alliance (CABIA) [8]. Moreover, Svolt Energy is one of China's largest battery manufacturers, with a battery installation volume of 1.20 GWh in June [9].

The potential impact of Svolt Energy's semi-solid-state battery production is far-reaching. These batteries offer improved safety, higher energy density, and a longer service life compared to traditional lithium-ion batteries [2]. This technology could significantly enhance the performance and efficiency of BMW's Mini electric vehicles.

Svolt's early adoption and development of semi-solid-state batteries position the company well in the competitive battery market. It allows Svolt to compete with other major players like CATL and adds value to BMW's Mini brand by providing advanced battery technology [3].

The production of affordable semi-solid-state batteries could make electric vehicles more accessible to a wider audience, potentially driving market growth and increasing adoption rates for electric vehicles [5]. This development aligns with broader industry trends focused on improving battery safety, efficiency, and sustainability. Svolt's efforts contribute to the development of more advanced battery technologies [3][5].

Moreover, higher efficiency and longer lifespan batteries can lead to reduced material usage and lower environmental impact over the life cycle of the vehicles, contributing to more sustainable automotive practices [2]. In summary, Svolt Energy's semi-solid-state battery trial production marks a significant step in the development of higher-performance, safer, and potentially more affordable electric vehicle batteries. This could have a positive impact on both the environment and the market for electric vehicles.
