Tech giant Google establishes artificial intelligence center in Ghana, pledging $37 million towards the continents AI development.
In the bustling city of Accra, Ghana, Google's AI Community Center stands as a beacon for AI development in Africa. This hub fosters learning, experimentation, and collaboration, bringing together students, developers, entrepreneurs, artists, and civil society to create AI solutions tackling challenges such as food security, healthcare, education, and local language inclusion.
The center's programming focuses on four pillars: AI literacy, community technology, social impact, and arts and culture, providing a broad and inclusive platform for AI engagement grounded in African priorities. Google's commitment to responsible AI development and nurturing a diverse ecosystem of talent and innovation is evident in this initiative.
As part of Google's overall $37 million commitment to AI advancement in Africa, other initiatives include launching 100,000 Google Career Certificate scholarships for students in Ghana, focusing on AI Essentials, Prompting Essentials, and other high-demand areas like IT support, data analytics, and cybersecurity. These scholarships are fully funded and self-paced, increasing accessibility to job-ready digital skills.
Google.org has also dedicated an additional $7 million to AI education across Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, and Ghana to support academic institutions and nonprofits developing localized AI curricula, online safety training, and cybersecurity programs.
Moreover, Google is investing $25 million into AI-powered solutions for food security in Africa. Two $1 million grants have been provided to strengthen AI research capacity. AfriDSAI at the University of Pretoria and the Wits MIND Institute are among the recipients, supporting applied AI research and training.
The Masakhane Research Foundation is another beneficiary, receiving $3 million for building datasets and translation tools in over 40 African languages. This investment underscores Google's commitment to language diversity in AI.
Meanwhile, on the continent, Cassava Technologies, the Econet group's tech firm, has launched an "AI-first" strategy with its own AI factory, focusing on building commercial products and integrations using African data.
These efforts highlight Africa's active participation in the AI race, with both Google and Cassava Technologies making significant investments. The continent is positioning itself as a leader in the evolving global AI landscape, with a focus on infrastructure development, talent cultivation, responsible AI practices, and localized solutions tailored to Africa's unique context.
