BSNL, one of India's leading telecom providers, has taken a significant step forward in digital innovation by launching its e-SIM service. The soft launch, announced by A. Robert J. Ravi, Chairman and Managing Director of BSNL, marks the beginning of a new era in mobile connectivity.
The nationwide expansion of the BSNL e-SIM service took place on July 15, 2021, following a successful soft launch. Himani Jha, a tech news writer at the platform, reports that this service is now open to both new and existing customers.
The e-SIM, an electronic substitute for traditional physical SIM cards, eliminates the need for physical SIM cards, providing a flexible, cost-effective solution for mobile users. It can be used alongside a physical SIM on devices that support dual SIM functionality.
To avail the e-SIM service, customers must carry an e-SIM-compatible device and a valid ID for digital Know-Your-Customer (KYC) verification. Once the process is complete, users receive a one-time QR code to download their e-SIM profile.
BSNL's e-SIM service offers instant activation, IoT-ready connectivity, and hassle-free usage on smartphones and wearables. It is likely to provide a seamless user experience, with the potential for quick and easy switching between network providers.
In addition to the e-SIM service, BSNL has introduced a new Anti-Spam and Anti-Smishing system. This system ensures secure delivery of critical communications such as OTPs, banking alerts, and government notifications. It also identifies and blocks suspicious links in phishing messages before they reach users, offering enhanced protection for subscribers from fraudulent communications.
BSNL joins other private telecom companies like Airtel, Reliance Jio, and Vodafone Idea in offering e-SIM services in India. However, it is yet to be confirmed when the e-SIM will be available in other parts of the country.
Himani Jha, who has contributed to leading publications such as Times Network, Gadgets 360, and Hindustan Times Tech for the past five years, reports that the e-SIM service was initially launched in Tamil Nadu on India's 79th Independence Day.
For customers wishing to switch to an e-SIM, BSNL's Customer Service Centres (CSC) are available for assistance. It is yet to be confirmed whether migrating from a physical SIM to an e-SIM will require additional charges or be free of cost.
