Temu Faces Legal Storm Over Data Privacy, Consumer Protection Concerns
Temu, the fast-growing e-commerce platform, faces a barrage of legal challenges and customer complaints. The Better Business Bureau has logged over 900 reports of unauthorized bank account withdrawals following Temu purchases. Meanwhile, the company is grappling with lawsuits and a congressional probe into its sourcing and labor practices.
The most recent legal hurdle for Temu is a class action lawsuit alleging failure to secure customer data and tardy breach notifications. Lead plaintiff Eric Hu claims Temu wiretapped electronic communications, accessed users' cameras and microphones, and tracked user activity on third-party websites without consent. Hu alleges Temu collected his data from these external sites where he made purchases.
Temu's in-app browser is at the heart of these allegations. It is suspected of tracking users' activities on third-party websites, raising serious privacy concerns. The lawsuit also accuses Temu of not complying with security standards, leading to the compromise of customer financial information.
Temu is not new to legal battles. It has faced two lawsuits from rival Shein in recent times. Both Temu and Shein are currently under congressional investigation for their sourcing and labor practices.
The sheer volume of complaints and legal challenges against Temu raises significant questions about the company's data security measures and consumer protection practices. As the investigation and lawsuits progress, Temu must address these allegations and reassure its customers about the safety of their personal and financial information.
