Tesla Cybertruck Shines in Safety Tests, Outperforming Ford F-150 Lightning
The Tesla Cybertruck has been making waves in the safety department, according to recent test results. Despite neither model being officially rated by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) as of October 2025, the Cybertruck has impressed in various crash tests and safety categories.
In July, the IIHS praised the Cybertruck's performance in crash tests, securing a 'Good' rating. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) followed suit in August, awarding it five-star safety ratings. Earlier this year, the Cybertruck received an overall five-star safety rating. Meanwhile, the Ford F-150 Lightning's safety ratings remain unavailable due to lack of official testing.
In a recent comparison, the Cybertruck outperformed the F-150 Lightning in several key categories. It earned a 'Good' rating for rear passenger injury measures, driver injury measures, and seat belts & child restraints. In the updated moderate overlap front crash test, the Cybertruck maintained its 'Good' rating, while the F-150 Lightning received a 'Poor' rating. Both trucks performed admirably in pedestrian crash avoidance tests, with the Cybertruck avoiding every scenario and the F-150 Lightning earning a 'Good' overall rating.
However, the Cybertruck received a 'Poor' rating for headlights due to excessive glare. The F-150 Lightning, on the other hand, earned an 'Acceptable' rating. The F-150 Lightning faced issues with the side curtain airbag, high neck tension, seatbelt submarining, and elevated chest injury measures, leading to a 'Poor' rating.
While official IIHS ratings are pending for both models, the Tesla Cybertruck has shown promising safety results in various crash tests. It has outperformed the Ford F-150 Lightning in several categories, demonstrating its commitment to safety. However, both models still have areas for improvement, particularly in headlight performance and specific safety features.
