Tesla to initiate manufacturing at its Shanghai megafactory on February 11, as per a recent report
The Shanghai Megafactory, a significant investment of ¥1.45 billion (C$290/US$200 million), has commenced trial production in January 2025. Located adjacent to Giga Shanghai, in the Lingang district of Pudong, this new facility covers approximately 2,100,000 square feet.
The factory, owned by Tesla, is dedicated exclusively to manufacturing Megapacks, Tesla's large-scale commercial energy storage solution. Each Megapack can store over 3 MWh of energy, making it a crucial component in the drive towards sustainable energy solutions.
Construction of the Shanghai Megafactory began in May 2024 and was completed in record time, seven months later. The factory is set for full-scale production, with an annual production goal of 10,000 Megapacks.
The Shanghai Lingang Economic Development Group has placed an initial order for Megapacks from the Shanghai Megafactory, marking Tesla's first major order for the production of Megapacks from a location outside the United States. The commissioning ceremony for the first energy storage plant outside the United States by Tesla will be held on February 11, 2025.
Satellite imagery shows the completion of the Shanghai Megafactory and its location in relation to Giga Shanghai. The total energy storage capacity of the Shanghai facility could power 50,000 homes in Shanghai for a year.
The ramp-up production capacity throughout the first quarter of 2025 is expected to significantly increase Tesla's global energy storage output, matching that of Tesla's Megafactory in Lathrop, California. This expansion is a testament to Tesla's commitment to sustainable energy and its growing global presence.
