Tested VW van: The "Bulli" earns the seventh position in evaluation
The new Volkswagen Transporter, a collaboration between Volkswagen and Ford, is set to make a significant impact in the commercial vehicle market.
The Transporter's standard wheelbase length measures 2,602 millimeters, while the base version of the vehicle is 61 millimeters longer than its predecessor, boasting a standard length of 5,050 millimeters. The new Transporter also fits into all common parking garages, with a height of just under two meters, ensuring convenience for urban drivers.
The vehicle's width, without mirrors, is 2,032 millimeters. This dimension may restrict the Transporter to the right lane in some highway construction zones, but the width between the wheel arches has been increased by 148 millimeters, making it easier to load pallets.
The new Transporter offers at least 5.8 cubic meters of cargo space, a ten percent increase from before, and the long version with high roof provides a maximum cargo volume of 9.0 cubic meters. The cargo area can be customized with various bulkheads to suit different needs.
In terms of comfort and convenience, the Transporter offers several notable features. The optional individual seats in the second row can be easily removed, and the vehicle comes with a new multifunction steering wheel and an electric parking brake with Auto Hold function. The infotainment system touchscreen is located above a control bar to the right of the steering wheel, and it can optionally be enhanced with a navigation system, Volkswagen Online Services "VW Connect" and "VW Connect Plus", and a Harman-Kardon sound system.
Important vehicle functions, menus, and audio volume controls are on this control bar, while the light functions are arranged on the left side of the steering wheel. A smartphone storage tray with an optional inductive charging function is located in the center console.
The new Transporter is equipped to handle heavy loads, with a payload capacity of up to 1.33 tonnes and a towing capacity of up to 2.8 tonnes. Pricing for the new Transporter starts at €36,780 for the 81 kW (110 PS) TDI panel van.
The new versions of the VW Transporter are produced in cooperation with Ford, based heavily on the Ford Transit platform, and are manufactured in Turkey as part of a deal between Volkswagen and Ford. This collaboration promises to bring the best of both brands to the table, ensuring a robust and reliable vehicle for businesses and individuals alike.
