TH Köln Lands €5M DFG Grant for 'Memory Culture in Crisis' Research
TH Köln is set to embark on a significant research project, 'Memory culture in crisis', funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) with approximately €5 million. This five-year initiative, led by Prof. Dr. Carolin Höfler and Prof. Dr. Babette Brinkmann, brings together nine professors from various faculties to explore how societal crises impact cultural heritage. The project, starting September 1, 2025, will delve into three key areas. Firstly, it will investigate the intersection of the climate crisis and cultural heritage. Secondly, it will examine urban cultural heritage in a post-migrant society. Lastly, it will explore the digital transformation's influence on cultural heritage. The team will employ a mix of established research methods and participatory approaches to analyze societal contexts, coping mechanisms, and resilience strategies related to cultural heritage in crisis. TH Köln's President, Prof. Dr. Sylvia Heuchemer, views this funding as a testament to the university's research-oriented and societally relevant work. She sees it as a motivation to further strengthen TH Köln's role as a pioneer for future themes. The project involves nine researchers, six PhD student positions, three postdoctoral positions, and will establish a new professorship. The 'Memory culture in crisis' research focus at TH Köln, led by Prof. Dr. Carolin Höfler and Prof. Dr. Babette Brinkmann, aims to shed light on the impact of societal crises on cultural heritage. With approximately €5 million in funding from the DFG, the project will foster interdisciplinary collaboration and contribute to TH Köln's role as a research pioneer.
