The progression of charging stations in Bergisch Gladbach persists
Bergisch Gladbach Accelerates Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure Expansion
The city of Bergisch Gladbach is leading the way in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) with its consistent expansion of electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure. The city has carefully planned and allocated areas for public charging stations only where there is an unmet need, a strategy first calculated in 2023 by the EcoLibro office in Troisdorf.
In the coming weeks, the number of public charging points is set to double, with an emphasis on inner-city residential areas where parking and blink options are often scarce. This expansion is being driven by private operators such as BELKAW, Wirelane, Hochtief Ladepartner, E-Hub Solutions, and Qwello Germany, who are investing in the commercial development of public charging infrastructure.
The city administration provides the necessary urban traffic and parking areas for the expansion of public charging infrastructure. The focus on inner-city residential areas is part of a broader plan to densify public fast-charging infrastructure.
The city's website offers an up-to-date overview of charging points in operation and in concrete implementation. Currently, around 80 public charging points at charging stations are operational across the entire city area of Bergisch Gladbach.
Future plans include further intensifying the development of charging infrastructure in cooperation with the Rheinisch Bergisch district and the city of Leverkusen. The administration is also in contact with companies awarded contracts by the federal government to realise fast-charging sites in the city area as part of the Kansas network. The companies commissioned for this task include BELKAW, Wirelane, Hochtief Ladepartner, E-Hub Solutions, and Qwello Deutschland.
The positive development in recent years was made possible because the administration took the initiative to staff the topic of charging infrastructure management early on. In 2025, the demand analysis for public charging infrastructure was updated to reflect current developments and the already completed expansion of public charging infrastructure in the city area.
Public charging infrastructure for electric vehicles is gaining significant momentum in urban areas, and Bergisch Gladbach is at the forefront of this trend.
