The Prospects for the Next Instalment of 'Star Wars Battlefront'

Gamers and die-hard Star Wars fans are clamoring for another installment of the beloved Star Wars Battlefront series. The recent resurgence in popularity of DICE's Battlefront II has given the community a chance to capitalize on the hype with a global day-long event to boost its player numbers and showcase the community's resilience.

The call for another Battlefront game sparked after Star Wars' May 4th holiday and Andor star Muhannad Ben Amor (Wilmon) voiced his endorsement for the idea. The Battlefront series has had a turbulent two-decade history, with two games developed during the Star Wars prequel era by Pandemic Studios and two more by DICE, the latter of which has yet to release a third game.

Despite the calls for a Battlefront III, the likelihood of another entry is uncertain. The difficulties faced when creating games for the Star Wars property are not unfamiliar, with many fan-favorite games that never saw the light of day, such as Boba Fett-starring 1313 and third entries for Knights of the Old Republic and Force Unleashed. Even EA, which currently holds the Star Wars game license, has faced its own struggles, canceling projects like a pirate-focused effort from Visceral Games and Motive Studios, and a Mandalorian-centered first-person shooter from Respawn.

Currently, DICE is fully committed to developing the next Battlefield game, while several other EA studios provide support. As a result, another Battlefront likely won't be coming from EA anytime soon, if ever. Mats Holm, a former live producer from Battlefront II, suggested a remaster of the previous game as a stepping stone for a proper sequel, ideally with members from the original team involved. However, whether EA would be open to a remaster remains to be seen.

Although we may not see a Battlefront III anytime soon, Star Wars has been making its presence felt in other areas. Since the release of Fallen Order in 2019, the franchise has primarily focused on single-player titles like Ubisoft's Star Wars Outlaws and 2026's Zero Company from Bit Reactor. The only exception to this trend is the space combat-focused Star Wars Squadrons. Nevertheless, EA has yet to recommit to Star Wars multiplayer, possibly due to the controversy surrounding Battlefront II's monetization and the success of Fortnite.

With the recent "Galactic Battle" tie-in event and numerous Star Wars character skins in Fortnite, the battle royale game has become a significant multiplayer component in Star Wars' gaming universe. As the franchise moves forward with new movies and shows, an entry in the Battlefront series could become increasingly challenging, especially given the quick disposal of online games.

With hopes high for a new Star Wars Battlefront game, it remains to be seen if it will ever come to fruition. However, as Star Wars embarks on a new chapter in its story, it's uncertain how a Battlefront III would fit in or who would be around to develop it.
