This weekend, Apple TV is Offeringly Complimentary; Here's Suggested Content to Explore

Consider it as an unexpected holiday treat. Some of the greatest streaming platforms are available for free viewing, enabling you to indulge in a series you've been eager to watch or explore several shows you've heard positive reviews about.

Apple TV is offering its services for free this weekend for the first time. From today until Sunday, you can access all Apple TV's streaming options without a subscription. Given Apple's extensive library of shows and movies, I thought I'd share some of my favorites.

Disconnection

If I had to recommend one show to watch on Apple TV this weekend, it would be Disconnection, without a doubt. This is an extraordinary TV series, brimming with intrigue, suspense, creativity, and originality. It tells the story of Tom Clarke (Adam Scott), a recent widower who finds employment at the enigmatic company, Vie. The unusual procedure, referred to as "disconnection," separates one's work consciousness from their personal consciousness, essentially creating two distinct individuals with no shared memories.

When Tom begins to question the practices happening on the "disconnected" floor of Vie, he follows a chain of clues into a dark and thrilling abyss. Meanwhile, his workplace persona begins to question Vie from within. Patricia Arquette, John Turturro, Christopher Walken and an exceptional ensemble of characters also star. Season 1 aired three years ago and I've watched it thrice in anticipation of Season 2, which premieres on January 17th. I believe this is the reason Apple is granting everyone a free weekend.

Shrinkage

The most entertaining dramedy on television currently, Shrinkage follows a recent widower named Jim (Jason Segel). His wife passed away in a tragic car accident, leading him to rely on alcohol, drugs, and women to cope with his pain and grief. As he tries to rebuild his life, he employs unconventional therapy methods with his clients, resulting in mixed outcomes. Harrison Ford plays Jim's mentor and boss, Paul. The show is both hilarious and deeply moving, delving into Jim's relationships with his friends, colleagues, and family in the face of unspeakable tragedy. The second season concluded recently, with a third set to debut soon. This was at the very top of my Best TV Shows Of 2024 list.

Sluggish Horses

If you enjoy spy thrillers, you can't go wrong with Sluggish Horses. The remarkable cast, led by Gary Oldman, shines in this series about the misfits of MI5, confined to Slough House. Although they may not be the elite, the “Sluggish Horses” always manage to stay one step ahead of both MI5's operatives and the various terrorists and criminals trying to thwart them. Oldman's Jackson Lamb is one of the most eccentric and lovable characters on TV. All four seasons of this show have been extraordinary, with impeccable pacing, outstanding acting, and thrilling stories that never let up. You could easily binge an entire season in a single sitting. (Here's my review of the Season 4 premiere).

Killers of the Flower Moon

A riveting, heartbreaking true story, Killers of the Flower Moon tells the story of the Osage people and the greedy men who attempt to rob them of their wealth after oil is discovered on their tribal lands. Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, and Lily Gladstone deliver powerful performances. I recently watched this masterpiece and believe it was more deserving of the Best Picture award than Oppenheimer. It's lengthy—3.5 hours—and quite grim, but it's a significant part of our shared history and will leave you contemplating its disturbing implications about human nature and greed.

Rotten Banana

Rotten Banana was one of my favorite comedies of 2024, despite normally not being a fan of Vince Vaughn's humor. The series focuses on Detective Andrew Yancey, a seasoned Miami detective with a big mouth and a knack for solving crimes. Though he's lost his job, he now works as a food inspector in the Florida Keys. When a mysterious severed limb is discovered by a fishing boat, Yancey embarks on an exhilarating adventure to unravel a sordid tale of murder and treachery that ultimately leads him to the Bahamas in search of the truth. It's filled with clever twists and turns, along with an excellent supporting cast.

Ted Lasso

The first season of Ted Lasso is unlike anything else, with its uplifting tone and ability to provide a dose of hope to all who watch it, even in the face of hardships. Although I'm less enthused by the subsequent seasons, it remains a one-of-a-kind show that trades cynicism for faith in humanity. The series follows Ted Lasso (Jason Sudeikis), an American football coach recruited to coach a major soccer team in the UK. Despite his doubts about his abilities to coach a sport with which he's unfamiliar, his persistence and charisma prove triumphant, winning the support of everyone he encounters.

Another awesome sci-fi series from Apple, titled Silo, delves into a bleak futuristic narrative. Set in a gigantic subterranean structure, this silo serves as a sanctuary for thousands of inhabitants residing in a post-nuclear era. Filled with enigma and intrigue, the story revolves around Juliette Nichols, played by Rebecca Ferguson, who assumes the role of a sheriff. She's tasked with investigating not only murders but also unravels the silo's hidden secrets, the shadowy group controlling its affairs, and the chilling truth behind humanity's descent into underground existence.
