THW Marks 75 Years of Civil Defence and Disaster Response

The Technisches Hilfswerk (THW) in Bavaria is marking its 75th anniversary this year. Since its inception in 1950, the organisation has evolved to become a vital force in civil defence and disaster response, with around 16,000 volunteers dedicated to protecting the local population in their free time.

The THW's history is marked by significant events. It was founded on August 22, 1950, initially tasked with protecting the world population from war effects and clearing post-World War II debris. Over the decades, its role has expanded to include emergency supply and restoration, as seen after Russia annexed Crimea in 2014.

The organisation's volunteers have been instrumental in numerous domestic and international relief efforts. In 2021, thousands of Bavarian THW forces were deployed to the Ahr Valley to combat flood damage. Last year, they responded to the 'Orinoco' flood disaster in southern Bavaria. Abroad, they provided technical assistance in Slovenia in 2023 and responded to the severe earthquake in Turkey in the same year.

The THW's civil defence capabilities have gained renewed importance with the Russian attack on Ukraine. Its volunteers have been on the frontlines, providing crucial support in disaster situations, as seen in the tragic train accident in Bad Aibling in 2016.

To commemorate its 75th anniversary, the Bavarian State Chancellery is hosting a reception for around 350 THW members in Munich. The THW's commitment to protecting and assisting the local population, both at home and abroad, stands as a testament to its enduring importance in civil defence and disaster response.
