Toyota initiative to withdraw 94,000 electric vehicles due to defective windshield defogger issues
Toyota Recalls Over 94,000 Electric Vehicles Due to Defroster and Defogger Issue
Toyota Motor North America has announced a recall of over 94,000 electric vehicles, including the 2023-2025 Toyota bZ4X SUV, Lexus RZ, and Subaru Solterra EV, built through June. The recall is due to a defect in the HVAC system that affects the defroster and defogger system, leading to reduced visibility during colder temperatures.
The issue only affects vehicles equipped with an HVAC electronic control unit (ECU) running specific software from the Tier-1 supplier DENSO. According to Toyota, an estimated 100% of the recalled vehicles have a defect in their HVAC system.
In colder temperatures, the performance of the defroster in the recalled EVs may be reduced, leading to frost, ice, or fog buildup on the windshield that can reduce driver visibility. The problem with the HVAC system in the recalled EVs is caused by the programming of the HVAC control ECU software, which enters a "fail-safe mode" under certain conditions, interrupting the heater function and impacting the defroster function.
The recalled electric vehicles use an electric compressor for their air conditioning system, controlled by software. Toyota is currently working on a software remedy for the HVAC system issue in the recalled EVs.
Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed on Oct. 20. Dealers will update the HVAC system's electronic control module control software and replace any defective electric air conditioning compressors if needed, free of charge. It's important to note that other Toyota or Lexus models sold in the U.S. are equipped with a different HVAC software version and are not part of the recall.
This recall is Toyota's 7th of 2025. In May 2025, Toyota recalled 443,000 Tundra pickups for rear tail light malfunctions. Toyota Motor North America has recalled over 94,000 electric vehicles due to the HVAC system defect, with the recalled vehicles including the 2023-2025 Toyota bZ4X SUV, Lexus RZ, and Subaru Solterra EV. The company is working diligently to address this issue and ensure the safety of its customers.
