UAE and Finland boosting their efforts in Arctic research and weather forecasting
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Finland have recently strengthened their cooperation in polar research, meteorology, space weather, and climate science with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This partnership is a significant step in the UAE's Emirates Polar Programme, which aims to establish Emirati research laboratories in both the Arctic and Antarctic to enhance understanding of changing global climates.
Key aspects of the collaboration include joint scientific and operational meteorological initiatives, focusing on exchanging expertise and best practices, with a particular emphasis on polar studies. The UAE will benefit from Finland's advanced space weather services and artificial intelligence (AI) tools, aiming to improve climate forecasting capabilities in critical sectors such as agriculture, aviation, maritime navigation, and disaster management.
The agreement also includes plans for joint research infrastructure and facilitation of scientist and researcher exchange programs between the two countries to promote collaborative fieldwork and studies in polar regions. Discussions on opportunities to reform international meteorological organizations to better address evolving global environmental and climate challenges were also held.
The collaboration aims to deepen understanding of climate change impacts, develop innovative environmental solutions, and consolidate the UAE’s role as a significant player in global polar research. The agreement was signed by Dr. Abdulla Al Mandous, President of the World Meteorological Organization and Director-General of the UAE’s National Centre of Meteorology, and Professor Petteri Taalas, Director-General of the Finnish Meteorological Institute.
The discussions also covered support for field research in polar environments, and the exchange of scientists and researchers between the two countries will be facilitated as part of this collaboration. The UAE remains committed to collaborating with international partners and exchanging knowledge and expertise, guided by the principles of equality and mutual benefit.
This partnership marks a strategic move for both countries, leveraging Finland's advanced meteorological technologies and the UAE's expanding polar research ambitions. Projects aimed at understanding climate change and its effect on ecosystems and human societies were explored during the discussions, with the aim to open new avenues for researchers and scientists from both countries.
