Uber Enters Courier Business in Major German Cities

In a strategic expansion, ride-hailing and food delivery service provider, Uber, has ventured into the courier business in Germany. As of today, the new service called "Uber Courier" is available in Berlin, Cologne, Munich, Frankfurt, Düsseldorf, Hamburg, Hannover, Stuttgart, and Mannheim. The service made its debut in the UK last week.

Uber plans to leverage its existing network of delivery partners for the new courier service. Couriers utilizing either bicycles or cars will transport goods based on the shipment size and distance. Each shipment can weigh up to 20 kilograms with a maximum combined weight of 60 kilograms that can fit in a mid-size car's trunk. Similar to ride bookings, Uber Courier costs are displayed upfront in the app, calculated based on travel distance and time.

According to Germany CEO, Christoph Weigler, Uber's new service aims to cater to small local businesses, enabling them to quickly deliver goods to customers within city limits.

However, Uber's foray into the courier business is likely to attract criticism from the taxi industry. The company has faced resistance from taxi associations, unions, and parts of the government since its entry into the German market eleven years ago due to concerns related to business models and working conditions at Uber partner companies. Traditional taxi industry representatives are particularly critical of the expansion.

Last year, Uber opened its app to all taxi companies in Germany to strengthen its partnership with the taxi industry. In cities like Berlin, around 20% of all taxis now cooperate with Uber, with over 4,000 taxi drivers participating nationwide.

The entrance of Uber into the courier business may lead to increased competition for transport and delivery resources in urban areas, potentially affecting traditional taxi services. To offset this challenge, taxi companies in major cities have been enhancing their digital booking capabilities and lobbying for regulatory equivalence.

In cities like Berlin, Cologne, and Munich, where ride-hailing demand is strong, Uber's service expansion may lead to increased traffic congestion and regulatory scrutiny while increasing competition for licensed taxi fleets. To navigate this complex and competitive urban transport landscape, taxi companies are striving to improve their digital capabilities and adapting their strategies to counter Uber's technological and service diversification advantages.
