UK Cancels £20m Intelligent Traffic Management Fund

The UK Department for Transport (DfT) has canceled the £20m Intelligent Traffic Management Fund, a decision made official in March 2023. The cancellation is part of the government's review of public spending due to a difficult financial position.

The fund, aimed at improving traffic management and reducing congestion, has been scrapped. Max Sugarman, chief executive of Intelligent Transport Systems UK, has criticized this move, describing it as a missed opportunity for enhancing traffic flow and efficiency.

Despite this setback, the DfT will continue to explore new technology opportunities for network management in collaboration with the road transport sector. The department will also monitor the spending and outcomes of the £50m Traffic Signal Obsolescence Grant and Green Light Fund to ensure value for money.

The cancellation of the Intelligent Traffic Management Fund has raised concerns about the future of traffic management initiatives. However, the DfT's commitment to exploring new technologies and monitoring existing spending suggests a continued focus on improving the UK's road transport network.
