Xiaomi SU7: Revolutionizing the Electric SUV Market
In a groundbreaking move, Xiaomi's latest offering, the SU7, has garnered an astounding 200,000 pre-orders within just three minutes of its launch in China. This electric SUV, available in multiple versions, promises to redefine the electric vehicle (EV) landscape.
The SU7 comes in three main variants: Standard, Pro, and Max (or Ultra). The Standard and Pro models are equipped with a single HyperEngine V6 permanent magnet synchronous motor, delivering 220 kW (about 295 hp) and 400 Nm torque. The Ultra variant, however, is a high-performance powerhouse, boasting up to 1,526 horsepower and all-wheel drive, capable of advanced drifting and holding the production EV lap record at Nürburgring Nordschleife.
The battery options vary as well. The Standard SU7 features a 73.6 kWh LFP blade battery, offering a range of 700 km (435 miles) on CLTC cycle. The Pro model upgrades to a 94.3 kWh battery, providing an impressive 830 km (516 miles) range. Future battery options of 132 kWh and 150 kWh are planned for release in 2025.
Performance-wise, the SU7 delivers impressive results. The Standard model accelerates from 0–100 km/h in 5.28 seconds, while the Pro model takes approximately 5.7 seconds. The Ultra model, designed for sporty handling, offers advanced drift control and all-wheel drive for optimal performance and stability.
The sleek, minimalist interior of the SU7 houses advanced infotainment and driver-assistance systems. Xiaomi's intelligent steering and power distribution enhance control, particularly in the Ultra performance edition.
Pricing for the 2026 Xiaomi SU7 starts at around $50,000 for the base model. The Ultra and Pro models, with their premium features, are expected to carry higher price tags, although specific MSRP details are yet to be disclosed.
Delivery times are lengthy due to high demand and production constraints. As of mid-2025, expected wait times after order locking are:
- Standard version: 57–60 weeks.
- Pro version: 49–52 weeks.
- Max/Ultra version: 41–44 weeks.
Orders are locked after one week with non-refundable deposits, and only one order per buyer is allowed initially to curb scalping. The delivery delays have been a point of controversy and customer complaints, with Xiaomi addressing some of these issues actively.
Xiaomi's capabilities in consumer electronics, operating systems, chips, and AI give it a distinct advantage compared to traditional car makers. The company requires a deposit of 5000 yuan (approximately $700 USD) for each order, with a 5-day cooling off period for refunds.
The Xiaomi SU7 is set to launch on March 28, with the prices to be announced on the same day. Customers will need to make a reservation on an App after the price is announced. Xiaomi founder and CEO Lei Jun aims to revolutionize the car selling approach with the SU7.
Lei Jun is confident about Xiaomi's ability to produce a smart car due to its strong advantage in intelligent technology. He aims for the SU7 to be the best-looking, best driving, and smartest sedan within 500,000 yuan (approximately $69,250).
Initial availability will include only two versions of the Xiaomi SU7: the Standard version and the Max version, which uses Xiaomi's self-developed 800V silicon carbide high-voltage platform. The charger for the SU7 features a stylish design with a white body and cable, and a black charging head. The SU7 can charge from 10% to 80% in 20 minutes, and can add 510 km of range in 15 minutes.
Lei Jun believes that the driving experience is far better for a sedan compared to SUVs. Despite this, the SU7 offers a spacious and comfortable ride, making it an attractive option for those seeking both style and functionality.
