Unique Robotic Artist Paints Murals Throughout Tesla's Gigafactory
Tesla's Berlin Gigafactory Transformed by a Robot Muralist
The Tesla Gigafactory in Berlin has undergone a unique makeover, with its exterior walls adorned with intricate, colorful murals created by a specialized robot painter.
The robot, designed by Mihkel Joala, is equipped with a print head holding up to 12 paint cans and a lifting mechanism with Kevlar cables. It moves up and down the concrete walls, spraying millions of precise paint dots to render detailed artwork. The robot is also assisted by small propellers that help push it gently against the wall as it paints.
The process begins with local graffiti artists creating initial designs, which are then digitized using powerful software. The robot painter transforms these digital designs into physical murals by "printing" on the factory walls, covering large surfaces with intricate, colorful graffiti art inspired by Berlin's local spirit and Tesla's products.
The decision to use a robot muralist was made by the workplace design lead, Vincent. He explained the decision in a video posted by the Tesla brand itself, stating that this technique enables the factory to be covered in elaborate artwork efficiently and with high precision.
Each wall of the factory has five different colors painted onto it, with the murals drawing inspiration from both the city of Berlin and the factory's production. The creation of the murals involved collaboration between a creative team, artists around the world, and the in-house team.
The success of this project is part of Tesla's wider effort to cover the Gigafactory's concrete surfaces with art, making use of a fusion between traditional graffiti culture and advanced robotic technology.
Tesla has been successful in the electric vehicle industry, with the release of the Cybertruck and Roadster, among other achievements. Recently, even the US military has started buying Cybertrucks for target practice. The robot muralist is just one of the many innovative solutions Tesla is employing to revolutionize the automotive industry.
