United States and UK leaders, Trump and Starmer, seal agreement on artificial intelligence and nuclear energy technology
In a historic state visit, President Donald Trump and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer engaged in a series of high-level discussions, marking a significant moment in the special relationship between the United States and the United Kingdom.
The visit commenced with Trump's arrival at Chequers, following an overnight stay with the royal family at Windsor Castle. The discussions between the two leaders covered a wide range of topics, including the ongoing conflict in Gaza, the Ukraine crisis, and the war in Ukraine.
In a surprising turn of events, both Starmer and Trump agreed on the need for a roadmap to peace in Gaza, with Starmer calling the situation 'intolerable.' However, they had some disagreements on the issue of recognizing a Palestinian state in the context of the Israel-Gaza conflict.
Trump stated that Hamas is planning to use hostages as bait in any potential attacks, focusing his remarks on the hostages held by Hamas and expressing a desire for their immediate release. Starmer, on the other hand, argued that Russian President Vladimir Putin is 'not someone who wants peace,' citing recent bombardments by Russia on Ukraine and the violation of Poland's airspace by Russian drones.
Trump expressed frustration with Putin, saying he 'let me down' regarding the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. In an attempt to pressure Putin, Trump suggested that reducing the price of oil could pressure Putin to withdraw from the war, stating, 'If the price of oil comes down, Putin's gonna drop out. He's gonna have no choice.'
Apart from the contentious issues, Trump and Starmer also signed a new technology partnership, which includes investments in artificial intelligence and nuclear power. Trump claimed to have secured $350 billion in deals during his trip across the Atlantic.
The Trumps attended a state banquet at Windsor Castle, with guests including Steve Schwarzman, Rupert Murdoch, Tim Cook, Jensen Huang, and Sam Altman. King Charles spoke about the special relationship between the U.S. and the U.K., emphasizing their shared values and history.
The partnership between the U.S. and United Kingdom was touted by both leaders as having the 'power to change lives.' Trump praised the United Kingdom for laying the groundwork for law and liberty and declared the bond between America and the United Kingdom as irreplaceable.
Unfortunately, the visit was marred by a military helicopter crash near a base in Washington state and a guest death at Universal's Epic Universe after they became unresponsive on a roller coaster.
The Trumps will conclude their historic state visit on Thursday and return to Washington, marking the end of a whirlwind of deals, disagreements, and diplomacy.
