Unusual developments unfolding in the realms of Nigerian music and technology
The Music-Tech Innovation Challenge, a competition aimed at identifying and developing innovative solutions for four opportunity areas in the Nigerian music industry, recently concluded with a final pitch event. Hosted on CrowdCast, the event attracted over 280 people in attendance.
The competition, birthed from a partnership between CCHub and Music & Tech Space, a startup founded by Bez Idakula, focused on four categories: Label Management, Event Management, Legal Advisory for Artists, and Artist Management.
In the Label Management category, Royalti.io emerged as the winner. Audu Maikori, founder of Chocolate City Group, served as the judge for this category. The Artist Management category was won by The Music Learning Cap, with Godwin Tom, CEO of The Godwin Tom Company and an artist manager with over 13 years of experience, presiding as the judge.
Tix.Africa took home the Event Management category, with Wale Davies, CEO of Fatherland Media and one half of the hip-hop duo ShowDemCamp, serving as the judge. The Legal Advisory category for Artists was won by TheContractAid, with Uduak Oduok, founder of Africa Music Law and an international fashion and entertainment lawyer, as the judge.
In addition to the main categories, the audience had the opportunity to vote for a fifth category called "Audience Favourite". MusicHangout was the winner in this category.
Francis Sani of the CCHub team spoke about the need for challenges like these due to issues like piracy in the Nigerian music industry. He emphasised the importance of supporting innovative solutions that can help tackle these challenges and drive growth in the industry.
The 12 finalists for the challenge were published by CCHub after a call for applications. Each winning solution was started before the challenge was announced, demonstrating the innovative spirit and potential of the Nigerian music-tech scene.
The winning teams will receive technical support from CCHub and funding for scaling. As the future looks good for music-tech in Nigeria, it is clear that these solutions will play a significant role in shaping the industry's growth and development.
