According to McAfee, by 2025, AI will empower cybercriminals to create more personalized and believable emails, masquerading as trusted sources. Such attacks are expected to escalate in sophistication and frequency, and currently, leading platforms like Gmail, Outlook, and Apple Mail lack the necessary defenses.

And just days into 2025, news reports echo this warning. As stated by The Financial Times, highly personalized phishing scams using AI are on the rise. Major corporations like eBay are already grappling with fraudulent emails containing personal information, possibly acquired through AI analysis of online profiles.

Check Point predicted this trend in 2025: "Cybercriminals will utilize AI to craft highly targeted phishing campaigns and swiftly adapt malware to bypass traditional detection mechanisms. Security teams will rely on AI-powered tools, but adversaries will retaliate with increasingly sophisticated, AI-driven phishing and deepfake campaigns."

AI bots can quickly learn a company or individual's tone and style and replicate them to craft convincing scams. They can also analyze a victim's online presence and social media activity to determine their interests, allowing hackers to produce bespoke phishing scams at scale.

McAfee's warning emphasizes the evolution of phishing, with the bait remaining constant, albeit the delivery more refined. Following an email that looks identical to one from your bank, asking for account details verification, ensures you adhere to standard security measures—like 2-factor authentication, strong and unique passwords, or passkeys.

However, new phishing tactics, especially in the corporate world, may seek information, gain trusted access within the enterprise, or instigate a broader, more complex fraud to divert funds or manipulate an executive into approving a financial transaction. Check Point suggests attackers now possess "the ability to write a flawless phishing email."

eBay's cybercrime security researcher Nadezda Demidova told The Financial Times that the availability of generative AI tools has lowered the entry barrier for advanced cybercrime. "We've witnessed a surge in the volume of various cyber attacks," she described the new scams as "polished and extremely targeted."

ESET's Jake Moore concurs. "Social engineering exercises a powerful grip over people due to human interaction," he said, "but now, as AI can mimic these tactics, it becomes more challenging to counteract unless individuals seriously reconsider their online posts."

The FBI issued a specific advisory last month, warning that generative AI can create content that could evade warning signs of fraud or deception. "Synthetic content is not inherently illegal," the FBI stated, "but it can be used to facilitate illegal activities, such as fraud or extortion."

Ultimately, according to Moore, "whether AI has heightened an attack or not, we must remind individuals about these increasingly advanced attacks and encourage them to exercise caution before transferring funds or revealing personal information when requested—even if the request appears authentic."

"Phishing scams generated using AI may also bypass companies' email filters and cybersecurity training," The Financial Times concludes. And given human errors continue to be the chief cause of compromises, a convincing lure at the outset can trigger a security crisis. From there on, subsequent emails may seem legitimate, and it's unlikely anyone will double-check the original source, potentially shattering the circle of trust.

"AI is impacting how Gmail protects billions of inboxes," Google asserts, "with innovative AI models that significantly boosted Gmail's cyberdefenses to recognize patterns and respond quickly." However, AI can also disrupt such patterns, making each email unique and purposefully avoiding the telltale repetition of the past—at least for advanced campaigns.

And this trend is likely to intensify. "AI has bolstered cybercriminals' capacity to amplify their attacks," Moore cautions. "Current phishing emails are processed through algorithms and analyzed, but when such emails appear genuine, they slip under both human and technological radar detection."
