US President Trump and UK Labour Leader Starmer seal a technology agreement focusing on AI and nuclear power between the United States and the United Kingdom.
In a historic visit, President Donald Trump returned to the United Kingdom for his second state visit, where he met with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer at Chequers, the prime minister's estate in Buckinghamshire.
The visit was marked by a series of significant events, including a new science and technology partnership announced during the meeting. The partnership aims to foster cooperation between the government, academia, and the private sector in areas such as Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Prominent companies involved in this partnership include Microsoft, which plans to invest $30 billion over four years and build the UK's largest supercomputer. Nvidia, in collaboration with British firms, will install 120,000 advanced GPU chips. The agreement also includes a British branch of Stargate, a Trump-backed AI infrastructure project led by OpenAI.
The visit began with a warm welcome at Windsor Castle, where King Charles III and Queen Camilla greeted President Trump. A military reception was held, followed by a tour of the castle. During the tour, the Trumps laid a wreath on the tomb of Queen Elizabeth II during a service at the castle's chapel.
Thousands of protesters gathered in central London to voice their opposition to Trump, holding anti-Trump signs and Palestinian flags. Despite the protests, the visit continued with a state banquet, where King Charles III focused on the special relationship between the U.S. and the U.K.
In his speech at the banquet, Trump praised King Charles as a "great gentleman and a great king." He also thanked Charles for his efforts in preserving his nation's history, uplifting the poor, and supporting soldiers. King Charles, in turn, proposed a toast to Trump and the first lady.
The deal also involves investments from multiple science and technology companies, including Citigroup, Boeing, Amazon, and Blackstone. British companies such as BP, GSK, Rolls Royce, and AstraZeneca are also part of the partnership.
The visit concluded with a farewell ceremony at Windsor Castle, where Trump and first lady Melania Trump departed with King Charles III and Queen Camilla. During their tour of the castle, the Trumps spoke with children, adding a touch of warmth to the formal proceedings.
This second state visit is a testament to the enduring relationship between the U.S. and the U.K., and the new science and technology partnership promises to strengthen this bond further. The partnership is expected to bring significant advancements in AI and other technological fields, benefiting both countries.
