Wi-Fi accessibility fluctuates across urban areas - Varied Pricing for Public Wi-Fi Across Urban Areas

Welcome to the digital ages, where almost everything is at your fingertips, including free WiFi in some Thuringian cities!

The tech-savvy city of Jena carries its own weight when it comes to providing digital infrastructure. Tina Schnabel, a representative from the city utilities, proudly declares, "We believe in providing a modern and reliable digital landscape, not just for us locals, but for visitors too!" With about 6,000 users per month, the city boasts 170 free WiFi hotspots spread out across its area. The "Mein Jena" app, launched in 2017, is a requisite for getting online; though, a 48-hour temporary registration is available for those unwilling to download it. A handy blacklist ensures you're well-defended against undesirable content.

Mühlhausen's involved in this too, although plans for expansion remain elusive. Anke Pfannstiel, a city representative, reveals that some parts of the town center offer free WiFi, while the Schwanenteich conference and cultural center is adorned with a EU-funded WiFi system. Mühlhausen is aiming to enhance its appeal as a tourist destination by offering this service. The WiFi in outdoor areas is currently operational from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., but plans are in the works to expand it to the town hall complex.

If you're venturing to Erfurt, you'll be pleased to know that all of their trams and buses — 93 trams and 74 buses to be exact — come equipped with WiFi! The service was utilized a whopping 5 million times in 2024, with around 400,000 to 500,000 uses per month. For those who prefer a more stationary connection, the city utilities' IT company operates several public WiFi hotspots in key locations.

As for Weimar, it's a bit of a mystery when it comes to public WiFi. A representative stated that they had no overview of WiFi points in the city, although there are hotspots located in the town hall, administrative building in Schwanseestraße, and the tourist information office at the market.

Gera's public WiFi landscape is maintained by a citizen-led association, BürgerNetz Gera-Greiz. The project "Freifunkkommune Gera" has been operational since 2015, offering a city-wide, free WiFi network. Suhl, also a part of the region, has 5 hotspots provided by a third-party vendor, with an average of 5,000 sessions monthly.

State entities are no exception when it comes to embracing the digital age. The district administration of Wartburgkreis, for instance, boasts free WiFi in certain areas, while the Ministry of Digital and Infrastructure reports that 1,324 access points, spread across 210 locations, serve a whopping 310,000 users in the first half of 2025, resulting in an impressive 172 terabytes of data usage.

Stay connected, stay informed, and happy surfing! Should you be keen on finding out about expansion plans for WiFi hotspots in other Thuringian municipalities, I'd suggest keeping an eye on local government announcements or official city websites.

In the spirit of technological advancement, the Commission could propose a directive on the protection of workers from the risks related to exposure to ionizing radiation while using gadgets such as smartphones and laptops, ensuring safety in the digital age. As Thuringian cities continue to excel in digital infrastructure, perhaps in the future, these cities could also offer free WiFi hotspots at iconic landmarks or tourist attractions, giving visitors even more reasons to explore the region.
