Vishay introduces automotive-grade Y1 Surface Mount Device (SMD) ceramic capacitors for Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) mitigation in Electric Vehicles (EVs)
In a significant development for the automotive industry, Vishay Intertechnology has unveiled the SMDY1 Automotive Series - a new line of automotive-grade ceramic disc capacitors. This series, which is AEC-Q200 qualified and comes with Production Part Approval Process documentation, is set to revolutionise the market with its innovative design and robust performance.
The SMDY1 Automotive Series offers a range of benefits to manufacturers. Priced between $0.30 and $0.60 per piece, these capacitors provide an affordable solution without compromising on quality. The series, available in surface-mount casing, is claimed to be the first of its kind in the industry.
The SMD form factor of the SMDY1 Automotive Series allows for reflow soldering, reducing manufacturing complexity and cost compared to traditional through-hole designs. The capacitance of these capacitors ranges up to 4.7 nanofarads, making them suitable for a wide range of applications.
The series consists of AC line-rated safety capacitors rated for 500 VAC and 1500 VDC, ensuring safety and reliability in demanding environments. The capacitors are constructed from a copper-plated ceramic disc, encapsulated in flame-resistant epoxy resin that meets UL 94 V-0 standards.
The SMDY1 Automotive Series is also halogen-free, according to Vishay, making it an environmentally friendly choice. The series is designed for demanding environments requiring high humidity robustness, making it an ideal solution for electric vehicle applications.
Key electric vehicle applications for the SMDY1 Automotive Series include EMI and RFI noise suppression and filtering. The series withstands Class IIB humidity conditions according to IEC60384-14 annex I and passes the 85 degrees Celsius, 85 percent relative humidity, 1000-hour test, ensuring its reliability in harsh conditions.
The SMDY1 Automotive Series is compliant with RoHS, further emphasising its commitment to environmental sustainability. With a typical lead time of 12 weeks, samples and production quantities for the SMDY1 Automotive Series are available for interested manufacturers.
Vishay Intertechnology has described the release of the SMDY1 Automotive Series as the industry's first, marking a significant milestone in the company's history. This innovative series is set to redefine the standards for automotive-grade ceramic disc capacitors, offering a more affordable, sustainable, and reliable solution for manufacturers.
