Warner Bros. Discovery has joined Disney and Universal Pictures in the legal battle against AI companies, alleging copyright infringements. The latest target is Character.AI, which has been hosting impersonations of popular characters like Elsa, Moana, and Darth Vader on its chatbot platform.

The dispute began in June when Disney and Universal sued Midjourney, an AI art generator, for allegedly infringing on copyrighted characters. Now, Warner Bros. Discovery has joined the fight, accusing Character.AI of similar infringements earlier this month. Character.AI has since removed many Disney characters from its platform following a cease-and-desist letter.

Warner Bros. Discovery, like Disney and Universal, is seeking to protect its intellectual property. The company has demanded up to $150,000 per image from Midjourney in a separate legal battle. Meanwhile, Disney has raised concerns about inappropriate conversations between chatbots and users, leading Character.AI to remove the characters in question. However, the process is ongoing, and Character.AI aims to partner with industry and rights holders to bring characters to its platform in a controlled manner.

The legal landscape for AI companies is shifting as entertainment giants like Warner Bros. Discovery, Disney, and Universal Pictures assert their copyright claims. Character.AI is working to address these concerns and establish partnerships with rights holders. As AI technology continues to evolve, so too will the rules governing its use of copyrighted material.
