Website Launch: Stop Scams reinforces Citizen Security - Focus on Awareness, Reporting, and Education
New Anti-Scam Initiative Launched in Kentucky to Protect Residents
Kentucky residents now have a trusted resource to help them avoid falling victim to scams, thanks to the launch of the new Team Kentucky Stop Scams website, StopScams.ky.gov.
Gov. Andy Beshear announced the initiative as part of an ongoing effort to protect Kentuckians from financial losses due to scams. The website was created in partnership among state agencies, private resources, and organisations such as the Better Business Bureau (BBB) and AARP.
Marni Rock Gibson, commissioner of the Public Protection Cabinet's Department of Financial Institutions, emphasised that the new venture is a collaborative effort among various agencies with a common goal of keeping Kentuckians safe from scams.
The new website serves as a one-stop resource for information on how to spot scams, report them, and recover losses. It provides detailed information about the initiative, resources for reporting scams, scam alerts, and educational materials on how to recognise scams.
AARP Kentucky Volunteer State President Gary Adkins expressed support for the launch, particularly for older adults and Veterans. Adkins urged Kentuckians of all ages to practice the "Pause, Check, and Protect" method to recognise the signs of a scam. Access to trusted information and real-time alerts, Adkins stated, empowers consumers to stay one step ahead of fraud.
Scams cost Kentuckians over $74 million each year, according to a 2024 FBI report. Gov. Beshear stated that while progress has been made in stopping scammers, this loss of money is unacceptable and will not be tolerated.
The Better Business Bureau is joining forces with Team Kentucky and AARP on StopScams.ky.gov, expanding their educational efforts across Kentucky. BBB President and CEO Reanna Smith-Hamblin expressed appreciation for the opportunity to work with Team Kentucky and AARP on this important endeavour.
Secretary Perry stated that if a scam is identified early, it can protect both financial and emotional wellbeing. The initiative builds on Gov. Beshear's previous efforts as Attorney General in focusing on preventing scams through awareness, reporting, and education.
Commissioner Gibson expressed gratitude towards Gov. Beshear, state government cabinet leadership teams, law enforcement, the Better Business Bureau, and the Kentucky Chapter of the AARP for their long-term commitment to helping consumers.
