## Unveiling the OM System OM-3: A Promising Contender in Astrophotography

The OM System OM-3, a digital update of the iconic film SLR of the same name from 1983, has emerged as a potential candidate for one of the best astrophotography cameras. This compact and versatile tool, incorporating technology from the flagship OM-1 Mark II, has been tested and found to deliver impressive results in both daylight and pitch-black night conditions.

During testing, images were scrutinized at full size on a desktop computer to evaluate detail and colour fidelity, and the results were found to be sharp and clear, with DSLR-like swift response times. The OM-3's images were set to the highest-quality, least-compressed setting (Large, Super Fine compression level) to ensure optimal quality.

One of the standout features of the OM-3 is its dedicated Starry Sky Auto Focus option, which was found to focus well on stars during testing, as noted earlier. This feature, combined with bulb shooting and Computational Photography modes, makes the OM-3 a strong contender for astrophotography enthusiasts.

The OM-3's burst shooting capabilities offer up to 120fps in Pro and Silent Capture modes, or 50fps otherwise, ensuring that fast-moving celestial bodies can be captured with ease. Moreover, the camera's image stabilization of 5-axis, 8 EV steps, helps to reduce blur and shake, further enhancing its astrophotography capabilities.

The OM-3's battery life, when fully charged, supports up to 590 shots or approximately 2 hours of video. It uses an SD memory card with a single card slot, providing ample storage for your astrophotography adventures. The camera's buffer can support up to 88 RAW files or 125 JPEGs during burst shooting, ensuring that you never miss a moment.

The OM-3 features a retro-looking design with plenty of manual controls, a Creative Dial for various colour or mono treatments, and a fully articulated 3-inch 1.62 million dot LCD touchscreen and a 2.36 million dot EVF. Its dimensions of 5.5 x 1.8 x 3.5 inches (139.3 x 45.8 x 88.9 mm) and weight of 3.4 oz (496 g) make it a portable and practical tool for travel, landscape, and wildlife photographers.

The OM-3's battery can be replenished in-camera via its USB port using a standard Android smartphone cable, adding to its convenience and practicality. Its dust-, splash-, and freeze-proof body made of magnesium alloy ensures durability, making it a reliable companion for your astrophotography journeys.

In the realm of astrophotography, the OM System OM-3 stands out as a versatile and capable tool. With its dedicated Starry Sky Auto Focus option, impressive burst shooting capabilities, and robust image stabilization, it offers a unique blend of features that cater to the needs of astrophotography enthusiasts. Whether you're a seasoned professional or a beginner, the OM-3 is a promising choice for your astrophotography adventures.
