Wind-Powered Cargo Ship Neoliner Origin Makes Maiden Voyage to Italy

Neoliner Origin, a groundbreaking wind-powered cargo ship, has made its maiden voyage to Italy, arriving in Livorno on October 4, 2023. This innovative vessel, operated by Neoliner, is set to revolutionize transatlantic cargo transportation, with its first commercial crossing to the United States scheduled for October 16, 2023.

The Neoliner Origin, developed by Neoline Armateur in collaboration with Corsica Sardinia Ferries, is a ro-ro type ship with two masts and 3,000 square meters of automatic control rigid sails. It can carry a significant amount of cargo, including up to 1,200 linear meters of rolling cargo, 400 cars, or 265 containers, representing up to 5,300 tons. Notably, it can transport 20 containers of products such as Hennessy cognac.

The ship's journey began in January 2023, with its launch following the establishment of Neoline Armateur in 2021 and the founding of Neoline Association in 2011. Led by ro-ro ship captain Michel Pery, a group of French merchant navy officers initiated the project to create and optimize new propulsion methods for cargo ships. The Neoliner Origin is a testament to their vision, saving approximately 80% of fuel compared to traditionally fueled ships of the same size.

The Neoliner Origin will operate on a transatlantic route between Saint-Nazaire and Baltimore, with intermediate stops at Saint-Pierre and Miquelon. Its maiden voyage to Italy and upcoming crossing to the United States mark significant milestones in sustainable maritime transportation, demonstrating the potential of wind propulsion for cargo ships.
