Winona Ryder predicted Lydia Deetz's fate as a life-long spinster

Rewritten Article:

Step right up, folks! While we're still in the dark about the juicy details of Beetlejuice 2: Bet another buck, Betty!, we've got the lowdown on some of its key players, thanks to the timeless charm of the 1988 original. You know, the skeletons that continue to rattle in our collective closets. In the ensuing years, Winona Ryder, with her iconic portrayal of goth teenager-turned-ghost whisperer-turned-Belafonte enthusiast, Lydia Deetz, had envisioned a certain life for her character. But when director Tim Burton came knocking with the sequel, it was a different tune altogether.

"I imagined keeping the movie's essence, but my thoughts and Tim's didn't always align," Ryder confessed to the folks at Entertainment Weekly. "I never fathomed Lydia becoming a mother, I figured she'd be a spinstster, holed up in that attic. But Jenna Ortega's performance as Lydia's daughter, Astrid, beautifully filled those gaps, and it felt just right."

If you've been keeping an eye on the trailers and teasers, you'll have noticed that Lydia has indeed stepped into specific dimensions of maturity (motherhood, career), but she hasn't left behind her signature goth-horror style or those signature spiky bangs. Now, Lydia's love interest in this sequel is none other than Rory, played by Justin Theroux. And guess what? He's a TV producer, presumably behind Lydia's hosting of a spooky show called Ghost House.

But that's not all; Lydia's not the only one with a life-after-death update. Time seemed to stand still for Ryder and Burton, who would frequently find themselves reminiscing about the Beetlejuice gang after all these years. "Every few years, we'd catch up, you know," Ryder shared with EW. "Tim would pace around, musing about these characters, wondering where their lives led. He had a particular fascination with Lydia and her path."

Catherine O'Hara, who reprises her role as Lydia's conniving stepmother, Delia Deetz, felt much the same. "Back in the day, that wild, gothic little girl, you ask yourself, where did she end up? What happenings shaped her life? What relationships bloomed? Tim was captivated by that idea, family, and the bond between the three leading ladies."

The remaining cast list includes, of course, Michael Keaton, back as the gutsy ghost buster himself, Beetlejuice, and Willem Dafoe, playing a cop in the spirit realm, and Monica Bellucci as Beetlejuice's ex, Delores.

So mark your calendars, because Beetlejuice 2 is set to hit theaters on September 6.
