YouTube leads in AI chatbot referrals

In the realm of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and online traffic, YouTube stands out as a dominant force. With over 2.6 billion users worldwide, the video-sharing platform has leveraged AI to optimise video viewing experiences and creator insights, driving substantial traffic and user retention.

YouTube's AI-powered features, such as "Jump Ahead", enable users to leap directly to key moments in videos, improving viewing efficiency and engagement. This boosts watch time and lowers user frustration or churn on the platform. Furthermore, AI tools on YouTube provide detailed analytics for creators, allowing them to understand audience behavior more precisely, optimise content pacing, and strategically place ads to maximise revenue.

The platform's dominance in AI-driven traffic is evident, with YouTube representing a substantial 82% share of internet traffic, as of recent years. This significant user base and the platform's video format, combined with AI-driven personalisation, create a powerful user experience that text or link-based platforms cannot match.

However, YouTube's AI advances are not without challenges. The platform has been cracking down on AI-generated "mass-produced" or repetitive videos to maintain content authenticity and viewer satisfaction.

Comparatively, platforms like Facebook use AI mostly for feed ranking and advertising optimisation, and Wikipedia relies on community edits with minimal AI involvement. Reddit is more community- and text-driven with AI playing a smaller role.

In May, YouTube received 37.1 million visits from chatbots, making it the top destination for link shares. Among news brands, The Guardian received 1.7 million chatbot referrals. The gap between search engine traffic and chatbot traffic is closing and complicated by the adoption of AI within many search engines.

Google, with its AI-powered search engine, is actively pushing AI-powered cross-format campaign types like Performance Max and Demand Gen, which access YouTube inventory. Personalised AI summaries are expected to become the norm, and brands and agencies must learn how to exist within this landscape.

More clicks heading to YouTube will consolidate its position as a leader in AI-powered advertising and increase overall ad revenue. YouTube's content is easy for chatbots to analyse due to clear titles, transcripts, and timestamps.

William Kynaston, PPC business director at media agency The7stars, stated that even if some ad revenue on Search is lost, traffic going to YouTube strengthens Google's video offering. The next three most visited sites from chatbot links were Facebook, Wikipedia, and Reddit, combined they received less traffic than YouTube.

The Learn English With TV Series channel on YouTube often appears when language learners ask chatbots for advice on improving listening skills. Wikipedia completed the top three with 10.1 million AI-driven referrals. Providing information via a concise and useful YouTube video increases the chance that the user clicks through.

Reddit is close behind with 9.6 million chatbot referrals, and is a valuable source of information for AI due to its vast archive of human conversations. Google may be playing catch-up in the chatbot market, with ChatGPT accounting for nearly 80 percent of referral traffic globally.

Three quarters of YouTube's chatbot referrals came from ChatGPT, Google's main rival for AI supremacy. Between April 2024 and March 2025, search engines received 34 times more traffic than LLM chatbots, according to OneLittleWeb data.

In conclusion, YouTube's blend of AI-enhanced video content and large user base makes it uniquely significant in AI-driven traffic, surpassing platforms like Facebook, Wikipedia, and Reddit in transforming streaming engagement and monetization through advanced AI tools. However, AI's role in traffic generation outside YouTube remains comparatively limited, with AI search currently contributing less than 1% traffic in some reports.
